Why team-building experiences should be a strategic investment?

“Over the past year, no area has undergone more rapid transformation than the way we work.” Satya Nadella, the CEO at Microsoft, said this in regards to the abrupt shift of the work environment amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The transition from an in-person work setting to a hybrid setting resulted in many difficulties for employees of all industries. In a survey initiated by Prudential this May, it highlighted the expectations of the American workforce in the post-pandemic hybrid work environment. More specifically, the survey asked what’s easy and difficult in remote work. The results are shown below:


From a socialization point of view, hybrid work means fewer person-to-person interactions. Being in the same space, working shoulder to shoulder in the office. Going out to lunch together, doing live, same-room meetings. Where all critical moments for the nonofficial interactions to happen. They helped create the socialization teams needed to maintain their connectivity and workflow.


Doing things together builds trust and social bonds. Better trust and social bonds in the people you work with have a direct impact on productivity collaboration and wellbeing. We are built to deepen interactions with people we have meaningful relations. In recent research, Harvard Reveals the # 1 Biggest Secret to Success and Happiness is the quality of our relations. The fourth director of the study, Robert Waldinger, a psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital and a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, said the study revealed that our relationships impact powerfully on our health. He also said the study uncovered these lessons about relationships: 1 - Social connections are good for us; 2 - loneliness really kills. 3 - While calling loneliness toxic, Waldinger said social connections made people happier and physically healthier. It made them live longer too.

We are not wired to get connected to a company or a workplace, this has long been understood by any workplace social researchers. People are wired to get connected to each other. Our strongest life bonds, our family are a set of connections created through people we had long and meaningful experiences with. But family strong relations are not a given thing. Any working mom or dad knows that the days they didn't spend quality time with their kids is almost irreplaceable and if they maintain the pattern their kids will grow up detached from them. This old format with all its limitations should be embraced by companies as a more strategic tool. While this format means we need to take people out and make them do things that are not in their comfort zone. We know for certain this would enhance their socializing.
